Elina Syniakova, a promising center from Ukraine, has rewritten her basketball story through resilience and the right opportunity. Currently playing at Butler Community College in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference, Syniakova has become an important contributor to a nationally ranked team — a stark contrast to where her journey began.
Syniakova started her American career at Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters basketball, but her first experience in Division I did not go as planned. Struggling to find her role and fit within that program, she made a tough decision to pursue a different path that would better support her growth as a player.
That decision led her to reach out to Boris Karebin, a coach and mentor who believed in her potential. Through Coach Karebin and the BK-CentR Player Development program, Syniakova was connected with Butler Community College, where she found a fresh opportunity to develop her game and reestablish her confidence on the court.
Since joining Butler, Syniakova has helped her team achieve a No. 2 national ranking in junior college basketball, showcasing her ability to contribute in a competitive environment and play a meaningful role in a successful roster.
But Syniakova’s basketball experience isn’t limited to colleges in the United States — she has also represented Ukraine at major international youth tournaments. Standing 6’2″ (188 cm), she has consistently been a key player for Ukrainian youth national teams:
- At the FIBA U18 Women’s EuroBasket Division B, she averaged 12.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, ranking among her team’s leaders in both categories.
- At the FIBA U20 Women’s EuroBasket Division B, she posted strong numbers with 12.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game against some of Europe’s emerging talents.
- In earlier youth competition, she showed high efficiency and impact on both ends of the court for Ukraine in European championships.
These international performances highlight Syniakova’s versatility, physical presence, and developing skill set — qualities that have translated well to the American game.
As she continues her journey with Butler and attracts attention for her all-around play, Syniakova has set her sights on the next level of collegiate competition. Her goal now is to earn a spot with a strong NCAA Division I women’s program where she can continue to grow and challenge herself against high-level competition.
While a professional career in the Women’s National Basketball Association might not be her primary path, Syniakova has real potential to succeed professionally in Europe after her college career — especially if she continues to elevate her game and seize the right opportunities.
Her story is a powerful example of how one pivotal decision — and one call to the right coach — can truly change a basketball life. 🏀
