Three years ago, the mother of young basketball player Timur Mikhailov from Belarus made an important phone call that would ultimately change the direction of her son’s life. She reached out to coach Boris Karivian with one clear request — to help Timur find an opportunity to study and continue his basketball career at a college in the United States.
At the time, Timur was a promising athlete with strong potential, but like many European players, he faced a major challenge: there was no direct pathway into the American college basketball system. The goal was not simply to find any team, but to place him in the right environment — one that would allow him to develop, adapt to the American style of play, and prepare for a professional future.
The process required patience and long-term planning. It took nearly two years of evaluation, skill development, recruiting preparation, and communication with programs before the right opportunity was found. Eventually, Timur earned a place at a high-level college program in Texas, marking a significant breakthrough in his journey.
Interestingly, the same college had previously welcomed another player from Belarus, Alexey Patsevich. After his college career, Patsevich continued his academic and athletic path at Southern Methodist University — a respected institution whose notable alumni include former U.S. President George W. Bush. This connection reflected a growing pathway for Belarusian athletes pursuing opportunities within the American basketball system.
Following his college graduation, Timur continued both his education and athletic career at Sul Ross State University. Competing at the NCAA Division II level in the Lone Star Conference, he joined the program on a full-ride scholarship and quickly established himself as one of the team’s clear leaders. His experience, discipline, and consistent improvement allowed him to make an immediate impact on the court while continuing to grow as a player.
Looking ahead, Timur aims to take another important step forward. After this season, he is expected to explore transfer opportunities in order to move into an even stronger university and conference, seeking higher competition and continued development.
The collaboration throughout these years has proven highly successful. From a young player searching for an opportunity overseas, Timur has grown into a mature student-athlete competing at a strong collegiate level and preparing realistically for a professional basketball career in Europe. The level of competition he faces today provides an excellent foundation and potential launching point into European professional leagues.
